Cholera Outbreak in Greater Accra Region

Last night, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) issued an important health alert concerning an outbreak of cholera in the Greater Accra Region, following a series of heavy rainfalls last week. The GHS has confirmed nine cholera cases in the Ada East and Ada West Districts as of October 11, 2024.

In a letter dated October 14th, the GHS stated that an emergency public health response has been activated at national, regional, and district levels. The multi-sectoral response teams are actively tracking the spread of the disease and implementing measures to contain it. Residents of Ada and surrounding areas are advised to be particularly vigilant.

Cholera is a serious illness transmitted through contaminated food and water, with symptoms including severe diarrhea and vomiting. If you or anyone around you experiences these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health facility.

We urge all residents, especially in the affected districts, to take precautionary measures. Ensure that the food you consume is well-cooked and hot, and always drink safe, clean water. Personal hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing with soap and safe sanitation, can help prevent infection.

The Ghana Health Service is also working on distributing potable water to affected areas and continues its outreach with public education on cholera prevention.

Remember, your health is paramount. We need you alive and safe. Stay cautious, and take all necessary measures to protect yourself and your family from this outbreak.

Stay safe, and stay informed.
